NV200 hailed for its excellence 01.08.2011 09:00:00 - Corporate - News

The NV200 has been selected as official New York taxi

The NV200 is set to reach iconic status. Starting in 2013, the multifunctional NV200 will take its place as the official New York taxicab. It follows a highly competitive bidding process that lasted four years, from which the NV200 was able to rise to the top thanks to what it offers passengers, drivers and the city of New York.

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) and the mayor cited several reasons why the NV200 was picked.

“We selected the NV200 because of its excellent scores on rider comfort, its outstanding safety features and because it offered the lowest purchase and operating costs of any vehicle we evaluated,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

These features mean that the NV200 isn’t just an excellent choice for the city of New York, but for any business or organisation which is looking for a safe, comfortable and low-cost fleet.

Some features that made the NV200 stand out include:
•    A fuel-efficient powertrain that reduces CO2 emissions
•    Class leading load space with ample room for 4 passengers and their luggage, a substantial improvement over current competitor vehicles
•    Sliding doors to ease entry and exit
•    Transparent roof panel with shade that provides passengers a stunning sky view of New York
•    Independently controlled rear air-conditioning
•    Mobile charging station with electric and USB plugs
•    Standard navigation system

The NV200 had not been offered in the States before and now it’s been selected to make up the biggest taxi fleet in the country. The NV200 has been on sale in the UK since November 2009, and its innovative design and features have won it a host of awards, including:

•    International “Van of the Year 2010”
•    What Van? Magazine “Van of the Year 2010”
•    ITM Van of the year 2010

Nissan will modify the NV200 to be appropriate for taxi use. In all, New York has 13,000 taxis travelling a total of 500 million miles per year. The existing cabs will be gradually replaced starting in late 2013. The last of the cabs will be replaced by 2018.

As part of the contract, Nissan will also offer an electric version of the NV200 in 2017. To prove the cost effectiveness of electric vehicle technology, Nissan is providing New York with six LEAFs this year to road test as electric taxicabs.
